Overview

Customer, sought to scale its IO Portal to manage thousands of connected IoT units without letting cloud costs spiral. ClearScale performed a deep technical audit, modernizing their data architecture and security framework to save $60,000 annually while hardening their disaster recovery posture for mission-critical industrial assets.

Meet Our Hero

Customer is a premier manufacturer of high-efficiency gas appliances and home-heating solutions. As they expanded their North American footprint, their digital infrastructure became the “central nervous system” for their products. Their proprietary IO Portal serves as the vital link between physical units in the field and the engineers monitoring performance, requiring 100% uptime and high-speed data processing.

The Goal

Customer’s goal was to achieve genuine Operational Excellence for their mission-critical IO Portal. This required a robust, future-proof cloud infrastructure capable of supporting high-frequency industrial IoT telemetry, ensuring 100% uptime for field assets, and managing massive data flows without uncontrolled cloud costs.

The Challenge

Challenge 01

Budget Leakage: “Verbose” logging and redundant IoT data indexes caused cloud costs to scale faster than business growth.

Challenge 02

Infrastructure Debt: Legacy Elastic Beanstalk workloads struggled to meet the demands of modern, large-scale industrial applications.

Challenge 03

Operational Risk: A lack of a formal Disaster Recovery (DR) strategy threatened the visibility of critical field assets.

Challenge 04

Data Bloat: Massive storage requirements in DynamoDB and high ingestion costs in AWS IoT Core created performance bottlenecks.

The Solution

ClearScale delivered a multi-phased modernization strategy focused on OT (Operational Technology) stability and Cost Efficiency.

Step 01: Industrial IoT & Data Optimization

Audited the telemetry pipeline, identified 9TB of unnecessary monthly log ingestion, and implemented S3 Deep-Tiering to archive historical sensor data while keeping active data in high-performance tiers.

Step 02: OT Resilience & DevOps

Upgraded legacy database engines to Amazon RDS (Graviton) for better price-performance and authored a comprehensive DR Plan for industrial control accounts, ensuring continuous visibility of field assets.

Step 03: Security Hardening & Governance

Established a quarterly cadence of AWS Security Assessments, including managing SSL/TLS certificates and deploying AWS Cost Anomaly monitors to serve as an early-warning system for security breaches and “shadow IT” spending.

The Impact

The partnership transformed the manufacturer’s cloud from a cost center into a resilient, scalable asset.

$60,000 in immediate annual savings realized through log and storage optimization.

9TB reduction in monthly log ingestion, eliminating “verbose” data noise.

The infrastructure now supports high-frequency telemetry with industrial-grade security and a proven path for future growth into containerized applications.

$54,500 in additional potential annual savings identified for future optimization.

Use Cases

  • Real-time Industrial Telemetry: High-speed data processing for monitoring thousands of connected IoT units.
  • Proactive Maintenance and Operational Excellence: Utilizing optimized data pipelines to shift from reactive maintenance to proactive asset management.
  • Disaster Recovery for Critical Assets: Ensuring continuous visibility and 100% uptime for the central nervous system connecting physical units to engineers.
